Fairfield Township stretches across a large rural area west and south of Bridgeton. Fairton is the township’s municipal center, while Gouldtown carries nationally recognized African American history. Constructed in 1780, the Old Stone Church is a remarkably preserved early Presbyterian meetinghouse. Its original Georgian interior survives, and the property is recognized by the State of New Jersey for its historic significance.
Gouldtown is one of New Jersey’s most significant historic African American communities. Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1860, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its importance to Black history and religion.
